The Black Berkey Primer is a hand-powered priming pump that makes it possible to prime Black Berkey filtration elements even when there is no tap water supply. There may also be some situations where the primer is useful, for example, in households with small sinks or short faucets, which will make the normal method of priming difficult or physically impossible. Priming the Black Berkey elements saturates the filters with water prior to use.
The Black Berkey Primer can also be used to purge (back-flush) the Black Berkey elements – using air instead of water to clean the proprietary pores of the compressed carbon filter wall. There are 2 main reasons why you may want to purge the Black Berkey elements: (1) It clears the pores of debris that has accumulated with use, and (2) It reduces the amount of time & effort needed to dry the filters prior to storing them.
How to prime the Black Berkey element using the Black Berkey Primer? After connecting the Black Berkey Primer to the Black Berkey element, immerse the element fully in clean water. Then pump the rubber bulb repeatedly until water squirts out the opposite end. Note that this may take some time. The Black Berkey Primer creates a simple pressure gradient which draws water into the Black Berkey element. Once the element is completely saturated with water, it will pass through the primer and come out the opposite end.
The Black Berkey Primer is the final piece in making your Berkey Water System your off-grid solution for clean drinking water and for everyday use.
